Every home and business can benefit from faster, more reliable broadband, the NBN or National Broadband Network is Australia’s answer to this problem.

The market has spoken with home buyers finding these new speeds vital “houses without connection or slow download speeds can be worth up to 20% less.” (Source: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/mar/02/fast-broadband-vital-to-homebuyers).

Based on ABS building approvals for January 2014 there are roughly 200,000 new dwellings built every year. Australia renovates and redecorates around 6,000,000 homes annually, with around 2,000,000+ having work done with a value above $5,000. Those spending $5,000 probably wouldn’t consider upgrading their cabling infrastructure. If at least 10% of these renovations are major this equates to some 200,000 homes that have an opportunity to cost effectively install a a structure cabling system. That’s roughly 400,000 opportunities annually.

And don’t forget the NBN will eventually be installed in over 11 million properties including residential and commercial.

The opportunities are to provide the pathways ready to receive the NBN in which ever form it comes into the future into a location where all communications infrastructure can be concentrated. Alternatively it could be providing just a few cables into the locations of bandwidth-hungry devices like smart TV’s and offices. This however, opens even more opportunities as this client may now require additional light, power, security, CCTV and the list goes on..

The NBN is the vehicle to wedge open the door to a full range of services that you and your company can provide. Technicians are required to be accredited for this work with open registration, structured cable and coax, and more.

You can be confident, AQUATel technicians are licensed and accredited for this work and can help you get your home or business NBN ready.

Optical Fibre.

Bandwidth – Fibre optic cables have a much greater bandwidth than metal cables. The amount of information that can be transmitted per unit time of fibre over other transmission media is its most significant advantage. With the high performance single mode cable used by telephone industries for long distance telecommunication, the bandwidth surpasses the needs of today’s applications and gives room for growth tomorrow.

Low Power Loss – Over a longer distance. An optical fibre offers low power loss. Providing it does not increase the number of connectors by ratio, distance and connectors. This allows for longer transmission distances. In comparison to copper; in a network, the longest recommended copper distance is 100m while with fibre, it is 2000m.

Interference – Fibre optic cables are immune to electromagnetic interference. It can also be run in electrically noisy environments without concern as electrical noise will not affect fibre.

Size – In comparison to copper, a fibre optic cable has nearly 4.5 times as much capacity as the wire cable has and a cross sectional area that is 30 times less.

Weight – Fibre optic cables are much thinner and lighter than metal wires. They also occupy less space with cables of the same information capacity. Lighter weight makes fibre easier to install.

Safety – Since the fibre is a dielectric, it does not present a spark hazard.

Security – Optical fibres are difficult to tap. As they do not radiate electromagnetic energy, emissions cannot be intercepted. As physically tapping the fibre takes great skill to do undetected, fibre is the most secure medium available for carrying sensitive data.

Copper.

Copper can be ideal for Ethernet LAN up to 100 metres. Due to low loss connectors in copper compared to high accumulated losses experienced at fibre connectors.

A through connector with two connectors can have a similar loss as 2 kilometres of fibre.

Media Conversion- Copper does not require media conversion. Optical fibre has a requirement for media conversion. Typically at both ends.

Attenuation- Insertion loss is lower at connectors for copper network when installed correctly.

Loss- Copper has a lower aggregated loss under 100 metres. Fibre loses its advantage over shorter distances due to connector loss.

To use fibre you need to consider your design needs ratio.

Distance

Bandwidth

Speed

Security

IP or conventional telephony

This will then help you decide on fibre or gig copper.

Cost – Copper cables are less expensive to install. Fibre is affected by flood (Brisbane 2012) and vermin once installed in conduit. (Kiama)

Transmission – transmission on optical fibre requires repeating at distance intervals. Copper does not require repeaters if kept under 100 metres

Bend Radius.- Copper bend radius of 4 as compared to between 10 and 32 for fibre. Fibre is more fragile.

Fragile – Fibres can be broken or have transmission loses when wrapped around curves of only a few centimetres radius. However by encasing fibres in a plastic sheath, it is difficult to bend the cable into a small enough radius to break the fibre. Copper is more robust

Protection – Optical fibres require more protection around the cable compared to copper

Do not assume fibre is better unless you are looking for good design over a distance or security. In building networks or campus less than 100 metres, fibre can lose its advantage over copper.

What impact will this have on cabling within the residential premises?

Probably not a lot as in most cases the customers who are made aware and do need the full benefit of high speed networking throughout their premises will have category 5e or 6 cabling installed at build stage or by retrofitting. Fibre in the average premises would not be of benefit in fact it would create its own problems…..

While in the Cities the Smart Home concept is widely accepted, country areas are far behind. Smart Home relies heavily on the cabling infrastructure in the home to enable Smart Devices to work and work reliably.

Well planned Structured Cabling system should be “Star Wired” and emanate from a central point whether its a panel in the cupboard, a cabinet or any other suitable enclosure. Many devices have own specs and requirements, but most need a DATA outlet to plug into – which is why it is so important to Cable premises in Category 5e cable or above. Structured (DATA) cabling can only be performed by accredited technicians holding Current ACMA Open Cable Licence with Structured Cable endorsement.

According to a new report by Juniper Research, entertainment will be the main driver, accounting for as much as “80% of total Smart Home service revenues” but everything from smart refrigerators that can automatically notify you of what’s running low, or smarter smoke alarms are also making a push and because of the huge variety of “smart” features a home can employ “no single stakeholder [will] be able to dominate thanks to the number of verticals within the home.”

According to OpenSignal’s State of LTE report for the first quarter of 2014, Australia has the fastest LTE/4G in the world thanks mostly to Telstra.

The OpenSignal report looks at countries all over the world, and analyses their 4G networks to see who has the best coverage, best speed and best carriers. Australia went up against sixteen other countries for the title, finally coming in first with Italy in second place followed by Brazil and Hong Kong.

The average download speed experienced on Australia’s world-beating 4G networks is 24.5Mbps, thanks mostly to stellar results from Telstra, who was the first telco to deploy the super-fast networking standard in the land Down Under back in 2011.

Telstra ranked second in the world on 4G speeds, with a result of 23.8Mbps. The only carrier to beat Telstra’s stellar 4G speed result was Claro, a Brazilian carrier, with speeds of 27.8Mbps.

The next Australian carrier in the list is Optus, which manages to squeeze out a speed of 19Mbps, giving it a rank of 10th in the world. Despite crowing about its new 4G network credentials, Vodafone doesn’t seem to appear in the list.

If you are moving home or business there are some things you need to think about in advance. Many leave it to the last minute or worse, forget about it completely – you rely so much on telecommunications but you just don’t realise how important it is until it doesn’t work.

Here is a Quick Guide to help you with this process:

1. First thing’s First – has the new place had phones/ internet installed before? if yes, do you know where the outlet is and if it looks to be in good working condition. If no – a new cable run needs to be organised asap with an Accredited technician holding current ACMA Cable Licence.

2. Organise for your service to be relocated. If your service provider is Telstra, you need to contact customer service area or give us a call and our Telstra connections consultant will handle this process for you! If you are with a different service provider – you need to give them a call and regardless of who your provider is, give them at least 2 weeks notice (often more, depending on area and infrastructure availability). If there is no current cable from the street to the building, this process will take much longer – best to organise this asap.

3. Broadband – as most people do, you probably have a broadband connection that needs to be relocated as well – if it is with the same provider (eg Telstra phone and Telstra broadband), you can request a “one-step relocation”, means both will be moved on the same day. However if your broadband is with a different provider to the phone that broadband is attached to, most providers will only relocate it AFTER phone line has been moved. This can create delays from several hours to even weeks!

Availability! – not all areas have the same types of services available. Eg. only very few Metro areas can offer Cable Broadband, some areas only have basic ADSL service but not ADSL2+, not all areas are NBN ready either. You need to know what is available to either move existing service or apply for a new type of connection.

4. Are the phone/ computer outlets in the right spot? – are the outlets in the rooms you want to use computers/ phones/ TVs? a lot of devices require “DATA” cable to work – many houses are only cabled with Telephony grade cabling. Smart TVs for example require either DATA outlet to plug into or Wireless. Wireless can be great but it is not very reliable. Wireless router/ access point needs a DATA outlet to plug into if you wish to position it centralised in the house for better coverage. Networked printer, may also need a DATA outlet. List the devices you have and where you need them and what type of connection they need to work, to work out your requirements.

5. Don’t forget about TV – are there enough outlets and are they where you want them to be? Do you need to upgrade the Antenna to handle the Digital TV? Do you have Pay-TV that needs to be relocated and is there sufficient cabling for it?

If you are not sure what type of cabling you require in your house or business, give our technical team a call for obligation free consultation.

Tick all these off your list and your move will be just that little bit less stressful!

Houses without broadband could be worth as much as 20% less than comparable properties with a good connection, according to experts who say superfast speeds are increasingly important to prospective homebuyers.

With soaring numbers going online to perform everyday tasks or to work from home, a robust connection is considered so vital that the property search website Rightmove has added a broadband speed checker button to every one of its listings, alongside details of transport links and schools. Estate agents report that rising numbers of buyers are willing to pull out of a deal if broadband is not available in that area.

Broadband speed does not solely rely on Connection Speed sent to you from Carrier or availability of speeds in your area. What you also need to keep in mind is the quality of cabling and technologies you are using in your home. It is now a recommended standard to install Structured (DATA) Network Cabling throughout the house – installed and terminated by qualified technicians to ensure minimal speed loss through connectors. Quality of your Network Switch and Router also plays an important role in ability to handle higher speed. Also don’t forget the type of technology used – whether its a physical cable connection or Wireless/ WiFi, which can be affected by the environment and has generally high speed but narrow Bandwidth allowance.

If you need a recommendation on Cabling requirements in your House or Business, give us a call for an obligation free consultation.
